James trained at the London Studio Centre. Since graduating he has worked in television and theatre.

His credits include Bill Kenwright's production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat followed by Swan Ester, Wind in the Willows, Alice in Wonderland, Snow White, Carousel, Russ Abbott's Summer Madhouse, The Mikado and Xmas Eve for the English National Opera. The UK tour of Oklahoma!, Fame, original cast at the Cambridge Theatre, understudying the part of Schlomo Metzenbaum, What a Feeling! UK tour, Shehallion, Rhythm of the Celts at the Edinburgh Festival, Edna - The Spectacle, Theatre Royal Haymarket, playing the part of Norm, Boogie Nights, Savoy Theatre, understudying the parts of Terry and Dean, Walt Disney's launch of The Hunchback of Notre Dame and the European launch of 101 Dalmations, Saturday Night Fever promotion in Germany for German TV.

Other television credits include "The Generation Game", "Live and Kicking", "Children in Need", "Talking Telephone Numbers" and "Top of the Pops".
