Create Your Own Play

Ask any member of the cast or crew of Disney's Beauty and the Beast: The Broadway Musical, and he or she will tell you about the joy and wonder of creating a new play. We thought you might enjoy seeing how they did it. Below are ten steps to creating theatre magic, along with this important advice: Have fun!

Ornament

1. Find a short story, folk tale, or fairy tale. Make sure it has a villain, conflict and a resolution.

2. Rewrite it as a play, setting the scene and outlining the dialogue. It helps to focus the story on the major characters, the obstacles they face in reaching their desires, and the actions they take to overcome these obstacles.

3. Choose a director, actors, costume and set designers.

4. Director, "block" the action. Designate actions that are natural for each character in the play.

5. Write a musical theme for your play (new lyrics for old tunes are a great way to go.)

6. Set designers, create simple yet clever locations for each major action.

7. Actors, memorize your lines!

8. Costume designers, go to it! Use your imaginations to create a "look" or style for each of the characters.

9. Artists and writers, get out your pens! Working in teams, design a logo and a promotional poster that are consistent with the style and look of the production.

10. Everyone, invite other classrooms and/or parents to see the show. They will be amazed by your efforts!
