Thea Barnes
Resident Dance Supervisor
Ms Barnes' professional career started with the Alvin Ailey
Dance Company and then the Martha Graham Dance
Company. Broadway and film productions include
Treemonisha and The Wiz and also Artistic Director of
Leeds-based Phoenix Dance Company from 1997-2000.
Ms Barnes has taught in community settings, elementary
and high schools, universities and professional schools in
USA, Britain, and Europe. Ms Barnes choreographed works
for Phoenix, commercial work and group works for
students in the USA and Britain, along with co-ordinating
small-scale theatre productions in Britain. Ms Barnes has
also had articles published in various magazines in Britain
including Dance Theatre Journal and Ballet Tanz. Ms Barnes
holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Dance from the
Juilliard School and has received her Master's Degree in
Dance Education from Columbia Teachers College in New
York and Master of Philosophy from City University,
London. Currently available from the British Arts Council is
an educational documentary entitled Not Just a Somersault
in which Ms Barnes and Bonnie Bird discuss the Martha
Graham dance technique.
