Alexandra Sumner-Hughes
Resident Director
Alexandra trained at Birmingham University and
Guildford School of Acting. She began her career as an
actor in repertory theatre, with seasons at the Northcott,
Exeter, Oldham Coliseum, Liverpool Playhouse,
Manchester Library, West Yorkshire Playhouse, and the
New Vic, Stoke. Favourite roles include Squeaky Fromme
in the regional premiere of Assassins, Tzietel in Fiddler
on the Roof directed by Matthew Warchus, Audrey in
Little Shop of Horrors, Polly Peachum in The Threepenny
Opera, Emily in The Hired Man, and her first acting job,
Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz. Plays include Whose Life Is
it Anyway?, A Chorus of Disapproval, Serious Money, and
The Snow Queen. West End credits: Kate in The Pirates
of Penzance at the London Palladium, Factory
Girl/Fantine in Les Misérables at the Palace Theatre, Kiss
Me Kate, A Midsummer Night's Dream and All's Well
That Ends Well for the Open Air Theatre, Regent's Park.
Alexandra was also a member of the Royal Shakespeare
Company for two years, where she developed an interest
in teaching vocal technique. She is a founder member of
Babel Theatre, a group formed with the aim of
developing new musical theatre, and worked on projects
for BAC and Goldsmith College. As a Resident Director
she toured with Gale Edwards' production of Aspects of
Love, and has directed The Best Little Whorehouse in
Texas, The Hired Man, Jack the Ripper and, most
recently, Girlfriends by Howard Goodall. As a teacher
Alexandra has been a prominent member of the Musical
Theatre Department at the Brit School, specialising in
acting technique. She has also directed work for the
Doreen Bird College of Performing Arts.
